What is a hydro facial machine and how does it work?

A hydro facial machine uses a technique called hydrodermabrasion. A handpiece with a specially shaped tip is moved across the skin while it releases fluid and applies gentle suction at the same time. This loosens and lifts away dead skin cells, oil and debris from the pores, and leaves the skin ready to take in hydrating serums. Unlike traditional microdermabrasion, which uses crystals or a diamond tip on dry skin, hydrodermabrasion keeps the skin wet throughout, which many people find more comfortable. Professional machines usually have several extra handpieces for steps such as cleansing, extraction and infusion, so the therapist can build the facial around your skin.

What should I expect, and is it suitable for me?

Your appointment starts with a short consultation about your skin, any products you use and your medical history. The treatment itself feels like a cool, wet massage with a light suction sensation. Most people can go straight back to their day, although skin can look a little pink for a short while. Hydro facials are generally suitable for most skin types, but we may adjust or postpone treatment if you have active acne flare-ups, broken or sunburnt skin, a cold sore, a recent chemical peel or you use strong prescription skincare such as retinoids. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, please let us know so we can choose suitable serums.
